Trauma-Informed Psychology
A considered approach to trauma and its impact
Trauma can affect the way people experience themselves, relationships, emotions and the world around them.
Sometimes the impact is obvious. At other times, people may simply notice that they are struggling with anxiety, emotional regulation, relationships, trust, boundaries or feeling safe and settled.
Trauma-informed therapy
A trauma-informed approach recognises the importance of safety, choice, collaboration and individual context.
Rather than assuming that one therapeutic approach will suit everyone, therapy is paced according to your circumstances, needs and goals.
Trauma-informed work may involve exploring:
Emotional and nervous system responses
Patterns of avoidance or hypervigilance
Relationship and attachment patterns
Boundaries and people-pleasing
Emotional regulation
Self-beliefs and shame
Anxiety and ongoing stress
Experiences of feeling unsafe or overwhelmed
You do not need to tell your entire story in your first appointment.
Trauma-informed therapy prioritises establishing safety and understanding what you need before moving into more detailed therapeutic work.
The pace of therapy is collaborative.
Therapy is not about forcing disclosure
Evidence-based psychological approaches
Depending on your individual circumstances, therapy may draw from CBT, ACT, DBT-informed strategies, attachment-informed approaches, mindfulness, emotional regulation work and other evidence-based psychological approaches.
Where a presentation requires a different level or type of care, appropriate referral or additional support may be recommended.
